I was the producer for this website about alternative energy in Prague and the United States. Students from the University of Miami and the VOSP school in Prague came together to create a bilingual website about where we are in alternative energy development and implementation.

The website is still in its beta version, but all of the video and infographics content is there. In addition to producing, I also created the opening video for the site, along with a Czech partner.

It was a wonderful experience to work with students from the University of Miami and the Czech Republic to create this website.

I shot and edited this video for the Miami Herald. It was part of a larger investigative piece that fellow colleagues and I worked on. It’s about a family crushed when their three children die because of a drunk driver that shouldn’t have been on the road in the first place. The video was a companion piece to three print articles we wrote together. The video was published on the Miami Herald website along with photographs that I took as well. The main print article that I anchored was published on the front page of the Herald along with my photographs as well.

Special Olympics Volunteer from Deborah Acosta on Vimeo.

This is the second of three videos I shot at the Special Olympics in Idaho. This story was very difficult to piece together because somehow my first tape (more than half the footage) was corrupt. When I went to look at it, all I saw were little blue squares. It was a terrifying sight, and something I don’t wish upon anyone. Thankfully, all of the interviews were on the second tape. It also didn’t hurt that my partner, Eileen Mignoni, is a wonderful photographer.

Another huge challenge was the fact that the athlete’s sister almost refused to be interviewed, and when we finally coerced her to do it, she would say: “No, I won’t answer that,” to most of the interesting questions.

I decided to interview the volunteer at the last minute, and I’m glad I did. She was very inspired by the Special Olympics, and it was a joy to speak with her.

Anyway, I think I did a pretty good job, considering all of the challenges.

Have you heard about this? I’ve applied for The Best Job in the World, which according to the website consists of blogging about, creating videos, and taking pictures of the Great Barrier Reef Islands off the coast of Australia. If I won, Tourism Queensland would provide me with housing, money, equipment, and airfare. All I had to do was send in a one minute video application (à la Elle Woods in Legally Blonde), explaining why I would be the best person for the job. The most important criteria was to make the video as entertaining as possible, and I hope I succeeded. Around 30,000 people have applied for the position, so it’s gonna be a tough race, but one I hope you’ll help me win.

Please click on this image and watch my video! It’s probably going to take a long time to play, so just minimize it and let it load. Unfortunately, their site wasn’t built with the anticipation that 34,000 people would be interested in the job, so most videos take a long time to load.

Also, please let me know what you thought of it! Do you think this video merits me a position working as Island Caretaker in The Best Job in the World? If you like it, rate it 5 stars, and help me win!

I made this video along with two others while I was at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho. My group and I were covering the Middle East, and in this story, we followed Rabah, who’s from Lebanon. Right when I met him, I was struck by his presence. He’s an extremely energetic, friendly, funny guy, and he was a complete joy to work with.

His mother was also wonderful. She was so excited to talk about her son, and how proud she was of him. Her love for Rabah was a magical thing to witness. I’m glad this was the case, because I was so tired while I was there.

I had worked on shooting and editing the opening ceremony footage the night before, so I was working on no sleep that day. My teammates actually came to pick me up at the newsroom at 6 a.m. that morning, and we went straight to the mountain to shoot Rabah. But what a beautiful mountain it was. It’s called Bogus Basin, and we got to revisit it again on the last day, when we went snowboarding.

The trip was an exhausting, exhilirating, rewarding experience. I learned so much about so much while I was there. And I met some really cool people. I definitely see myself going to Greece in two years for the Summer Games.
