Stimulus Jobs

Posted by Deborah On February - 3 - 2010

I shot and edited this video in one day during my internship this summer at the Sun Sentinel. It was a wonderful experience. I’d spent my whole internship writing business articles, so it was nice to shake things up a bit with video.

Colombia

Posted by Deborah On February - 3 - 2010

I shot this video in the outskirts of Bogota, Colombia last summer for a non profit organization called “Un Techo Para Mi Pais.”  Their goal is to eliminate homelessness in Latin America and the Caribbean by building temporary homes. In a few months they’re set to go to Haiti, where they hope to help rebuild the country one “techo” at a time.

Greening The Grid

Posted by Deborah On October - 1 - 2009

I was the producer for this website about alternative energy in Prague and the United States. Students from the University of Miami and the VOSP school in Prague came together to create a bilingual website about where we are in alternative energy development and implementation.

The website is still in its beta version, but all of the video and infographics content is there. In addition to producing, I also created the opening video for the site, along with a Czech partner.

It was a wonderful experience to work with students from the University of Miami and the Czech Republic to create this website.

Three Children Lost

Posted by Deborah On October - 1 - 2009

I shot and edited this video for the Miami Herald. It was part of a larger investigative piece that fellow colleagues and I worked on. It’s about a family crushed when their three children die because of a drunk driver that shouldn’t have been on the road in the first place. The video was a companion piece to three print articles we wrote together. The video was published on the Miami Herald website along with photographs that I took as well. The main print article that I anchored was published on the front page of the Herald along with my photographs as well.

Prague

Posted by Deborah On June - 26 - 2009

I’m in Prague for a multimedia website project about sustainable, alternative energy.  I’m having a wonderful time.

Each American student from the University of Miami is paired up with a Czech counterpart.  We’ve been learning some Czech sayings (Ahoy! Yak se mas!) and have been eating sausages and drinking lots of beer.

My partner, Barbora Schullerova, and myself shot this video as a practical exercise, before beginning our serious journalistic piece.  Our assignment was: make a 1 minute video about beer.

I’ll continue to document my time in Prague throughout these couple of weeks :)

Special Olympics Winter Games Volunteer

Posted by Deborah On March - 26 - 2009

Special Olympics Volunteer from Deborah Acosta on Vimeo.

This is the second of three videos I shot at the Special Olympics in Idaho.  This story was very difficult to piece together because somehow my first tape (more than half the footage) was corrupt.  When I went to look at it, all I saw were little blue squares.  It was a terrifying sight, and something I don’t wish upon anyone.  Thankfully, all of the interviews were on the second tape.  It also didn’t hurt that my partner, Eileen Mignoni, is a wonderful photographer.

Another huge challenge was the fact that the athlete’s sister almost refused to be interviewed, and when we finally coerced her to do it, she would say: “No, I won’t answer that,” to most of the interesting questions.

I decided to interview the volunteer at the last minute, and I’m glad I did.  She was very inspired by the Special Olympics, and it was a joy to speak with her.

Anyway, I think I did a pretty good job, considering all of the challenges.
