Prague

Posted by Deborah On June - 26 - 2009

I’m in Prague for a multimedia website project about sustainable, alternative energy.  I’m having a wonderful time.

Each American student from the University of Miami is paired up with a Czech counterpart.  We’ve been learning some Czech sayings (Ahoy! Yak se mas!) and have been eating sausages and drinking lots of beer.

My partner, Barbora Schullerova, and myself shot this video as a practical exercise, before beginning our serious journalistic piece.  Our assignment was: make a 1 minute video about beer.

I’ll continue to document my time in Prague throughout these couple of weeks :)

The Best Job in the World in the Great Barrier Reef

Posted by Deborah On February - 23 - 2009

Have you heard about this? I’ve applied for The Best Job in the World, which according to the website consists of blogging about, creating videos, and taking pictures of the Great Barrier Reef Islands off the coast of Australia.  If I won, Tourism Queensland would provide me with housing, money, equipment, and airfare.  All I had to do was send in a one minute video application (à la Elle Woods in Legally Blonde), explaining why I would be the best person for the job.  The most important criteria was to make the video as entertaining as possible, and I hope I succeeded. Around 30,000 people have applied for the position, so it’s gonna be a tough race, but one I hope you’ll help me win.

Please click on this image and watch my video! It’s probably going to take a long time to play, so just minimize it and let it load.  Unfortunately, their site wasn’t built with the anticipation that 34,000 people would be interested in the job, so most videos take a long time to load.

Also, please let me know what you thought of it! Do you think this video merits me a position working as Island Caretaker in The Best Job in the World? If you like it, rate it 5 stars, and help me win!

Obama Has A Bigger Inbox Than Yours

Obama Has It Harder Than You

Today was one of those days where everyone in my program yelped: “I’m overwhelmed with school work!!” -and we’re only two weeks into the semester.  But you know what, there are people out there who are even more overloaded, and have much more responsibilities on their shoulders. So guys, I offer this cartoon as a motivator. I came across it today, and I couldn’t help but feel much weight lifted. Also, I realized that we started school on the same day that Obama began his presidency. He’s also only a few weeks in, and just look at his desk!  A subject in a video I shot said it best: “how on earth he does not allow things to rattle him, I don’t know.”  I’m just glad that I can look up to him, for now at least.

(PS: I really don’t know why both my titles have such a that’s what she said quality, but that’s what came out at first blush, so I’m leaving it as is!)

Obama Inauguration

Posted by Deborah On January - 20 - 2009

I was at the Obama Inauguration today with fellow print students from the University of Miami. Virginia Gil and I worked with an intern from UPI to create the following video. Virginia conducts most of the interviews, but I make a couple cameos on there too (I’m the one that looks like the abominable snow beast). No, it’s not Kenny from South Park, but yours truly. As you’ll see in the video, it was cold!

IPhone Blogging

Posted by Deborah On October - 28 - 2008

I’m amazed at the capabilities of the IPhone.  It allows me to upload pictures and write on this blog from absolutely anywhere, which means there are many many many more posts to come.  Look out for some posts on the last day of early voting.  I’ll be blogging live from the queue at Coral Reef Public Library in Palmetto Bay, and updating my posts constantly throughout the day, for as long as I’m in line.
